‘Here, I’ll carry her. You get the door.’ Darryl scooped Luna up before kicking the car door shut.

Running ahead of him, Ginny raced to the door of the vets’ surgery and pulled it open, holding it as Darryl followed with Luna.

‘Bring her straight through.’ Gavin, the local vet, led them into a practice room. ‘Pop her on the table please.’

As soon as Darryl had lowered Luna down, Gavin began examining her gums before holding a stethoscope to her chest. ‘Has she eaten anything she shouldn’t have?’

‘I’m not sure. She went out for a walk this morning and may have eaten a bit of a sandwich, but we don’t know. What do you think is wrong with her?’

‘It’s difficult to tell before further tests, but my guess is she might have an obstruction.’ Gavin moved the stethoscope to Luna’s stomach. ‘Or ingested some kind of mould…’

‘Is she going to be okay?’ Darryl plunged his hands into his pockets.

‘We’ll take some bloods and X-ray her abdomen. Once we have the results, we’ll have a clearer picture. If you could wait outside, please?’

‘Yes, of course.’ Stepping forward, Ginny stroked Luna’s back before bending down and whispering to her, ‘We’ll be right outside. Gavin, here, will take good care of you.’

Darryl stroked Luna’s head before following Ginny into the waiting room.
